All participating teams are mandated to finalize their 15-player rosters by May 1.
As per ESPNcricinfo reports, Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson appears to be the frontrunner for India's primary wicketkeeper-batter position in the tournament. However, competition for this role includes the likes of Rishabh Pant, who returned to competitive cricket in this IPL season following a car accident in 2022, KL Rahul leading the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Ishan Kishan from the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Samson has surged ahead in the race, occupying the fourth spot in the IPL 2024 run tally, amassing 385 runs at an impressive average of 77.00 and a strike rate of 161.08, inclusive of four half-centuries, with his highest score being 82 not out. Rahul follows closely as the fifth-highest run-scorer this season, registering 378 runs at an average of 42.00, albeit with a relatively lower strike rate of around 144. Pant, meanwhile, stands as the sixth-highest run-getter with 371 runs from 10 matches, maintaining an average of 46.37 and a strike rate of 160.60, with three fifties to his credit. Kishan, despite lacking a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contract, has faced challenges, accumulating only 212 runs in nine games at an average of 23.55, yet boasting the highest strike rate among the contenders at 165.62.
While IPL performance is not anticipated to be the sole determining factor in squad selection, the management and selectors are reportedly intrigued by the pace and control exhibited by LSG's Mayank Yadav. However, Yadav's injury concerns may jeopardize his chances of securing a spot in the T20 World Cup squad.
The top batting order seems fairly settled, with skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to open, followed by Virat Kohli at number three and the top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav at number four.
The selection conundrum extends to the all-rounder slot, where Hardik Pandya faces competition from Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh. Pandya's bowling fitness remains a concern, with limited overs bowled for MI in the IPL, raising questions about his effectiveness. The inclusion of Dube or Singh could necessitate a trade-off between a backup wicketkeeper or bowler, with Rinku Singh possibly edging out as a backup pacer.
Additionally, Mohammed Shami's injury has depleted India's fast bowling resources, with Jasprit Bumrah poised to spearhead the attack. Arshdeep Singh's left-arm pace is likely to feature in the squad despite underwhelming performances in death overs. Avesh Khan from RR and Mohammed Siraj, although experiencing a slump in form for Royal Challengers Bangalore, remain contenders owing to their respective strengths.
