What is a good bone density score for a 70 year old woman? ›

For postmenopausal women and men age 50 years and older, the T-score is the number that is used for diagnostic classification, as follows: A T-score of -1.0 or above is normal bone density. Examples are 0.9, 0 and -0.9. A T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 means you have low bone mass or osteopenia.

For post-menopausal women and men age 50 and over, the result of DXA is based on T-scores: A T-score equal to or above -1.0 is considered normal bone density. A T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 is considered low bone density, sometimes referred to as osteopenia. A T-score -2.5 or below is considered osteoporosis.

Bone Density

There is minimal preparation before having your DEXA Scan. You must not take any calcium supplements (includes prescription and over-to-counter) the day of your DEXA scan. Wear loose and comfortable clothing with no metal. Remove any jewelry or other objects that may interfere with the study.

A bone scan is a type of imaging test which helps to examine any irregularities in the bone. Sometimes, these bone irregularities may indicate either infection or cancer disease. A DEXA scan specifically examines bone density to determine the chances of the development of osteoporosis.

The great thing about the DXA scan is that it requires very minimal preparation. For more accurate results you should make sure you are well hydrated and not have any food in your stomach (at least 3 hours since your last meal).

Females should wear a sports bra. Bras with under wires will need to be removed. It is okay to eat anytime before or after the exam.

There is no special preparation for a DEXA scan. You can eat and drink normally beforehand and take any medicines as normal.

What are the two medications that may cause osteoporosis after long-term use? ›

Aside from glucocorticoids, common medications, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs), and anticonvulsants, are also related to osteoporosis.

Results from DEXA scans are compared to standardized values to determine if your bone density is lower than normal and if you may have osteopenia or osteoporosis. While a bone density scan can examine the thickness of your bones, it cannot be used to assess arthritis in your joints which requires a standard X-ray.

Bisphosphonates are usually the first choice for osteoporosis treatment. These include: Alendronate (Fosamax), a weekly pill. Risedronate (Actonel), a weekly or monthly pill.

Don't take any multi-vitamins, calcium supplements or Fosamax for 24 hours before your test. Ask your technologist about any medications you take.

It is recommended that women < 70 years old are treated if the bone mineral density T-score is below -2.5. For women > or = 70 years of age, a lower cut-off point has been chosen, i.e. a Z-score below -1.

The condition does not directly influence life expectancy, though people who experience fractures from osteoporosis may have a shorter life span. Osteoporosis may also worsen the outlook of other diagnoses. With treatment, a person can avoid fractures, pain, and disability.

Anyone can develop osteopenia, but some groups of people are more likely to have it, including: Adults older than 50. People assigned female at birth (AFAB). People AFAB are four times more likely to have osteopenia than people assigned male at birth (AMAB).

A bone mineral density test is usually recommended every 1 to 2 years to monitor your response to treatment. DXA scans care typically done in doctors' offices and radiology centers.
